Laura Schaefer is a staff attorney with the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Death Penalty Representation Project, where she works with capital defenders and pro bono attorneys to ensure that death row prisoners receive the best possible representation throughout their legal appeals. Since 2015, Laura has also directed the ABA’s Capital Clemency Resource Initiative, a national resource for information about death penalty clemency procedures and best practices in capital clemency representation. Prior to joining the ABA, Laura worked with the Office of Capital and Forensic Writs in Austin, Texas, where she represented Texas death row prisoners directly in their state habeas appeals. Laura received her J.D. from Cardozo School of Law in 2013 and is a member in good standing of the New York State Bar. She received a master’s degree in human rights from the London School of Economics in 2010 and her bachelor’s degree from New York University in 2008.
