Joaquín José Martínez
Joaquín José Martínez is the first Spaniard and European to be exonerated from U.S. death row. He spent nearly four years on Florida’s death row for a double murder he did not commit. Convicted in 1997, he was sentenced to death despite serious flaws in the prosecution’s case, including unreliable testimony and withheld evidence. After an international campaign calling attention to his wrongful conviction, the Florida Supreme Court overturned the verdict. In 2001, Martínez was acquitted at a retrial and fully exonerated. He currently lives in Valencia, Spain, where he dedicates his life to his family and the fight against the death penalty.
