This Year’s Honorees

Our awards reflect the many ways people contribute to the cause of abolition. They honor leadership in advocacy, human rights, the arts, and lifelong service.

The Mike Farrell Human Rights Award
Established in 2006 by the Board of Directors of Death Penalty Focus in honor of Mike Farrell, this award recognizes courageous and inspirational leaders who, in the spirit of Mike’s vision and activism, strive for freedom, justice, and peace throughout the world. Presented in those years when an exceptional individual or organization has been identified, the award honors contributions that advance respect for human dignity, social justice, the abolition of the death penalty, and fundamental human rights, reflecting Mike Farrell’s extraordinary accomplishments and ideals.

The Abolition Award
Part of a long and noble tradition of abolitionist movements in the United States—most notably the successful movement to abolish slavery—is the growing effort to abolish the death penalty. Both of these movements have faced entrenched and fierce opposition that has been modulated, but not overcome, with the passing of generations. The Abolition Award is given each year to an individual or group who inspires us to recognize that the struggle to abolish the death penalty—however resisted—is a just and humane pursuit, one in which we can all take pride and from which humankind will benefit.

The Justice in the Arts/Media Award
The arts play a critical role in examining, clarifying, and illuminating the complex issues of crime and punishment, while reminding us of the fallibility of the human condition. DPF’s Justice in the Media Award is presented to those exceptional individuals who help expand society’s understanding of human behavior, deepen its appreciation for human dignity, strengthen its commitment to human rights, and inspire our passion for justice through various forms of written, aural, and visual communication.

The Lifetime Achievement Award
The Lifetime Achievement Award honors an individual whose enduring commitment to ending the death penalty reflects a lifetime of work on behalf of justice and human dignity. It is presented to those whose sustained efforts, moral leadership, and long-standing dedication have helped advance the cause of abolition and inspire others to continue the struggle.
