The Mario Cuomo Acts of Courage Award – Each year, the Acts of Courage Award is bestowed upon an individual whose courageous leadership in the struggle to end the death penalty demonstrates that one does not have to compromise one’s convictions or principles in order to succeed politically. The willingness of an individual to openly maintain a view that has traditionally been deemed politically unsafe is an indication of tremendous integrity, and reassures, invigorates, and energizes those of us who too often feel alone in the struggle for human dignity.
The Abolition Award – Part of a long and noble tradition of abolitionist movements in the United States—most notably the successful movement to abolish slavery—is the growing effort to abolish the death penalty. Both of these movements have faced entrenched and fierce opposition that has been modulated, but not overcome, with the passing of generations. The Abolition Award is given each year to an individual or group who inspires us to recognize that the struggle to abolish the death penalty—however resisted—is a just and humane pursuit, one in which we can all take pride and from which humankind will benefit.
The Justice in the Media Award – The arts play a critical role in examining, clarifying, and illuminating the complex issues of crime and punishment, while reminding us of the fallibility of the human condition. DPF’s Justice in the Media Award is presented to those exceptional individuals who help expand society’s understanding of human behavior, deepen its appreciation for human dignity, strengthen its commitment to human rights, and inspire our passion for justice through various forms of written, aural, and visual communication.
The Rose Elizabeth Bird Commitment to Justice Award – The Rose Elizabeth Bird Commitment to Justice Award honors individuals who uphold the ideals exemplified by Chief Justice Bird throughout her career. As a public defender, she worked tirelessly on behalf of those without the means to defend themselves. As Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court, she championed a rational, independent judiciary—free from political influence and committed to hearing those otherwise unheard. Recipients of this award share her unwavering dedication to the fair and equal treatment of all people, regardless of their place in society.
