This year’s Capital Case Defense Seminar, scheduled for February 14-17 in Monterey, will feature a “Fireside Chat with California Supreme Court Justice Goodwin Liu.” Liu has been on the state Supreme Court since September 2011. Before joining the court, he was an associate dean at Berkeley Law.
Some of the highlights among the many topics to be discussed include the “Colorado Method Training,” a focused, in-depth session on jury selection, “Sunday Morning Reflections,” and a “Coping with Grief and Loss as Defenders Workshop” for self-care and connection.
According to the CCDS, it is the largest conference of its kind in the U.S. It is co-hosted by California Attorneys for Criminal Justice and the California Public Defenders Association. The seminar offers “an intensive educational opportunity for anyone involved in, or considering taking on, the defense of a capital case. It is designed not only for lawyers, but also for mitigation specialists, paralegals, investigators, and experts working in capital defense. The CCDS will also include non-capital sessions relevant to all criminal defense practitioners,” CCDS states.
