Welcome!
Thank you for your interest in joining the DPF Pen Pal Program!
As a participant, your letters can bring comfort to those living under a sentence of death, who often face stigma, pain, isolation, and fear.
Please review the following brief program guidelines:
-
Consistency is Key: Clear communication is important. Be upfront about how often you can write to avoid disappointing your pen pal.
-
Sending Items: Your pen pal may request specific resources, but prisons have strict rules. You’re not obligated to send anything, so it’s okay to say no.
-
Protect Your Privacy: Avoid sharing personal details like your job, family, or religion, especially in the early stages.
-
Be Mindful of Content: All mail is screened by prison staff, so don’t write anything you wouldn’t want others to see.
-
Focus on Neutral Topics: Avoid discussing their case. Stick to general topics like books, movies, or TV shows.
-
Respect Boundaries: If any letters make you uncomfortable, clearly state that your intentions are to offer friendship and support. You may end the correspondence at any time.
-
Ending Correspondence: If you decide to stop writing, let us know. We can match you with another pen pal if you’d like.
Writing Instructions:
-
Address Options: If you prefer not to use your home address, use the DPF Office address: Death Penalty Focus, 500 Capitol Mall, Suite 2350, c/o [Your Name]. We’ll scan and send letters to you in PDF format.
-
Stick to Basics: Write with a black or blue pen on plain paper, using plain envelopes. Only include letters or cards—no additional items, as they may be confiscated.
