Last night, the South Carolina Supreme Court denied Brad Sigmon’s motion to delay his execution, scheduled for Friday. The 67-year-old Sigmon was sentenced to death in 2002 for killing David and Gladys Larke, the parents of his former girlfriend, Rebecca Barbare, who was shot but survived.
The state will execute Sigmon with a hood over his head and a target pinned over his heart because he opted for a firing squad over the state’s two alternative options: electrocution (the default method) or lethal injection. Sigmon’s lawyer told NBC News that just the fact that Sigmon had to choose how to be killed “is horrifying.”
We hope you will join South Carolinians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (SCADP) in signing their petition asking South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, who has the sole authority to grant clemency, to give Sigmon a permanent reprieve from execution.
If you prefer to call Gov. McMaster, SCADP asks that you call 803-734-2100 and use the following script:
“Hi, my name is [Name] and I live in [City and Zip Code]. I am calling today to ask that Governor McMaster grant clemency to Brad Sigmon, who is scheduled to be executed March 7, 2025. Please tell the Governor to use his executive powers and show mercy to Brad Sigmon.”
You do not have to be a resident of South Carolina to sign the petition or call the governor. Please let Gov. McMaster and the corrections department know that there is no place in civilized society for state killing and that a firing squad is a uniquely and horrifyingly brutal execution.
